I tried to teach my kids with books.
They gave me only puzzled looks.
I tried to teach my kids with words.
They passed them by often unheard.
Despairingly, I turned aside.
“How shall I teach these kids?” I cried.
Into my hand they put the key
“Come,” they said, “play with me.”
What is Occupational Therapy?
“Occupations refer to the everyday activities that people do as individuals, in families and with communities to occupy time and bring meaning and purpose to life. Occupations include things people need to, want to and are expected to do”
World Federation Occupational Therapy 2012
A child’s occupations are:
Being a family member
Self-Care, including eating/drinking and sleeping
How we help
We work towards understanding why your child is experiencing difficulty performing their occupations and we design an individualised therapeutic program to achieve success in their “job” of being a child.
We can do this through child lead therapy that focuses on:
- Addressing underlying issues impacting on the development of further skills.
- Educating the child and parent about why some tasks are so difficult and what can be done in child’s natural environment to help.
- Changing the environment to facilitate attention, concentration and physical positioning in order to promote success in chosen goal and build confidence.
- Understand the strengths of the individual child and how these can be used to facilitate the child’s development
